A castle and manor at Gainsborough dates back to King Stephen in the twelfth century but the current building was built in 1455 when Thomas Burgh inherited the manor.

Gainsborough Old Hall has a magnificent Great Hall at its centre, linking the East and West Ranges, and boasts one of the best preserved examples of a late medieval kitchen in England. Famous visitors to the Old Hall inlcude Richard III, Henry VIII, and John Wesley.
