Lincoln Mystery Plays

05 Aug 2022 - 06 Aug 2022

The Lincoln Mystery Plays are on the road this August, heading to Gainsborough with a vibrant fresh production of the ancient classic.

With links to Medieval tradition, revival of this locally-distinct historical theatrical experience is a much-anticipated highlight of the county’s arts calendar.

First to perform outdoors at Lincoln Cathedral’s new Dean’s Green from July 25 to 30, for the first time ever, the Lincoln Mystery Plays will tour Lincolnshire towns too – coming to the principal churches in Louth, Gainsborough, Horncastle and Sleaford – in the first week of August.

Taking you on a journey from Creation through to Redemption, this fresh adaptation in re-telling familiar Bible episodes has a striking resonance with circumstances today as it explores truth, lies and power and ultimately what it means to be human.

Balancing playful humour and poignant sincerity in a way that has the power to be life-affirming and life-changing, this is epic Medieval drama brought to life in spectacular settings. It draws on Lincolnshire heritage and folk tradition in an exploration of the universal and timeless relationship between God and man and is jam-packed with mirth, merriment, musicality and a modicum of mayhem.

Normally performed once in every four years, it’s bouncing back into the summer sun from a lockdown-enforced delay with boundless energy and enthusiasm.

Performed by a community of local actors under professional direction, it is presented in outdoor and spacious church settings which provide for your comfort and personal distancing needs.

Tickets (£12 and £15) are on sale now at www.lincolnmysteries.co.uk (online booking will include a booking fee). Early booking is advised. Also on the door at each venue.

All perfromances start at 7.30pm.
