Relax at the Beautiful Walled Garden Baumber

Just a short drive from Horncastle, Walled Garden Baumber sits hidden from view behind fields and woodland making it a peaceful and tranquil haven. Drive through the woods slowly and you may even be rewarded with a glimpse of the local deer herds.

Originally the site was a nineteenth-century walled kitchen garden that belonged to the former Stourton Hall and provided it with fruit and vegetables. It is a rare example of a double walled garden and covers just under four acres. When it was a full working garden records show that the land was tended by six gardeners.

The walls give the gardens so much character and provide the perfect backdrop to the interesting planting schemes. They were built between 1817 and 1826 and you can find evidence of this in carved bricks in the outer wall which forms part of the boundary wall of the old formal gardens.

Today Walled Garden Baumber is a fantastic place to visit and open for free to the public. At the entrance is a lake, complete with a small beach area with deckchairs from which to enjoy the views. Around the rest of the gardens there are a wide range of planting schemes with areas of grasses, succulents and areas with international themes.

It’s very easy to spend a few happy hours here. There’s a lovely café serving freshly prepared sandwiches, cakes and drinks and which offers a range of open and covered seating. As well as an interesting plant stall, which I must confess has tempted me on every visit, there are also some great ideas for your own home or for gifts.

The site is very accessible and also dog friendly with lots of convenient parking. The gardens host private weddings and public events throughout the year.

They have some fantastic events coming up this Autumn - make sure you’re following them on Facebook to find out more.
