Caistor to Great Limber

  • Cycling
  • Caistor
  • Distance 23.51 Miles
  • Elevation 937ftFT
  • Duration 2 hours approx

This ride from Caistor takes you towards the top end of West Lindsey at Great Limber and follows mainly quiet roads and passes through several small villages.

There are really only two climbs of note, the first exiting Caistor and the other when you return to the town. There is a bit of a speed bump on the approach to Howsham, but the smell of bacon baps and coffee should steel you up this. The route does sneak out of West Lindsey to visit Howsham, but the café, Clayton’s Corner, is a cycling mecca.

Distance: 23.7 miles (38.1km)

Ascent: 937ft

Grade: Moderate

Journey Time @ 8mph: 3 hours approx.

Parking: Roadside - please park responsibly.

Toilets: Town Hall.

For more information or to download the GPX file visit the Cycling West Lindsey Website.

Step by step instructions
  1. Let's set off!
  2. 1

From the Market Place ride towards the A1084 (pass the post office) and turn right up the hill.

  3. 2

At the top of the hill turn left onto the A1173. When you reach the bend in the road leave the A1173 by bearing left, in reality you will be carrying straight on.

  4. 3

Follow the road around to the right when you reach the fork in the road, passing woodland on both sides of the road. From this point enjoy almost 3 miles (4.8km) of unbroken descent.

  5. 4

At the crossroads turn left into Great Limber. If you come to the A18 you have come too far, but you can turn left here and re-join the route at point 6.

  6. 5

Continue to ride up the road called Brickyard, passing the village hall and the pleasant village pond.

  7. 6

At the post office turn left again and head towards Grasby. There is a gentle climb from this point onwards.

  8. 7

Go straight across at the crossroads continuing to climb towards Grasby.

  9. 8

When you reach another crossroads opposite The Cross Keys turn right and ride along the A1084 for 0.5 mile (0.8km).

  10. 9

Take the first turning on your left to Owmby and descend into the village.

  11. 10

Halfway through the village you will need to turn down a small lane on the right signposted to Searby and Howsham; it is easily missed if you are travelling at speed. Continue on this road for 0.7 miles (1.1km) before turning left onto Back Lane.

  12. 11

Take the first turning on the left and head up Howsham Lane. Continue along this road for nearly 2 miles (3.2km). After crossing the railway line, you will find a cheeky little climb up to Howsham.

  13. 12

At the T-Junction turn right if you wish to visit Clayton’s Corner (a local cycling mecca about 200m down the road) or turn left to continue on the route.

  14. 13

Descend down Howsham Hill and at the sharp left hand bend bear right towards North Kelsey. Take care when turning at this junction.

  15. 14

Continue following this road through North Kelsey, all the way to South Kelsey.

  16. 15

When you reach the crossroads in South Kelsey turn left and follow the road for 2.25 miles (3.6km) to Moortown.

  17. 16

At Moortown’s crossroads turn left again towards Brigg.

  18. 17

Take the first turning on the left and ride down Smithfield Road. This quiet lane will take you to another crossroads where you will turn right towards Caistor.

  19. 18

Follow the road all the way to Caistor as it gently climbs. The gradient slowly increases as you approach the town. There are two way to get back to the starting point, both include a climb of the same magnitude. The first way is to continue all the way up to the T-junction, turn right to climb Caistor Hill and then take the turning on the right after the pedestrian crossing. Or you can turn right onto Hersey Road, left on to Navigation Lane and left again onto Nettleton Road. Follow the road past the Heritage Centre on Plough Hill and climb up to the Market Place.

  20. You made it! Well done.
