The InterConnect Walks provides a series of suggested walks across the Lincolnshire countryside.

Bus stops are located at the start and finish, of these walks, delivering you to some of the most beautiful spots Lincolnshire has to offer. Explore the stunning scenery, discover wildlife havens or simply enjoy a picnic in a picturesque spot.

Distance: 7.5 miles (12km)
Time: approx. 3 to 4 hours
Terrain: Along footpaths and bridleways which can be muddy at times. Some roadside walking, including crossing the A46 and A18 dual carriageway. Part of the route by kind permission of the landowners.
Toilets: The Swallow Inn and Laceby Arms - for use of patrons only. Please take off your muddy boots before walking through the lounge.
Stiles: A few. Some are stock proof and therefore may be difficult for some dogs.

Step by step instructions

Let's set off!

From the bus stop in Cabourne, walk away from St Nicolas' Church in the direction of Grimsby, passing various 'humps and bumps' in the grass fields either side of the road as you leave the main village.

Turn right onto the next bridleway to walk past White House Farm, then uphill along a sunken old lane. Towards the hill top, turnabout to spot Pelham's Pillar in the distant Cabourne High Woods.

At the crossroads of bridleways, turn left before the hedge, to walk downhill and then uphill, skirting the edge of Badger Hills. This landscape of rolling hills and dry valleys is very typical of the chalk wolds. Continue on, past a clump of beech trees, onto a wide green lane. Follow this downhill, turning left to walk beside Jubilee Plantation. Look for Grimsby Dock Tower on the skyline and common knapweed in the verges.

Just before the A46, turn right to cross the corner of Jubilee Plantation, bearing left through the hedge to continue along the edge of the woodland and the line of the old road. Turn right through the wide hedge gap ad into a grass field, turning left to continue walking parallel to the A46. This section of the walk is permissive and is only available to walkers. It has been agreed with kind permission of the landowners and forms part of the Countryside Stewardship Scheme.

Cross a stile, with the impressive early Victorian farm buildings of Swallow Grange on the opposite side of the road. Continue along the tarmac footpath into Swallow, with the Old Rectory on your right. Follow the old A46 Caistor Road past the Swallow Inn and Holy Trinity Church to the curiously shaped Millennium Milepost.

Keep straight ahead along Grimsby Road, following the old main road as it becomes a path. At the clearing, look across to see evidence of ridge and furrow ploughland preserved in the grass field opposite. On reaching the lay-by, CROSS THE A46 WITH GREAT CARE, continuing along the route of the old road.

As the path goes downhill, at the bottom, turn left to follow a grass track through the valley bottom. Listen for the great tit's characteristic tea-cher tea-cher tea-cher song beside the woodland. Continue straight ahead at the first junction of paths into Irby Dales. The steep sided valley to your right was cut through the chalk by torrents of glacial meltwater during the last Ice Age.

At the second junction, turn left to follow a footpath up into Rush Hills Covert and then downhill to rejoin the bridleway as it leaves the woodland. Continue on this through the grass fields, keeping left on the track, through the cattle pens, to arrive beside the A18 road.

CROSS THE DUAL CARRIAGEWAY WITH GREAT CARE to walk along Temple Lane towards Aylesby. Just before the copse, turn right to follow the signposted footpath across a field, with fine views of St Lawrence's Church to your left.

On reaching the tarmac path, turn right, following the path as it widens into Cooper Lane, passing both school and library. At the T junction, turn right onto the High Street, past St Margaret's Church, to the bus stop in Laceby Market Place.
