Market Rasen to Welton

  • Cycling
  • Market Rasen
  • Distance 25.72 Miles
  • Elevation 528FT
  • Duration 2 hours approx

This route follows mainly quiet roads with a couple of stretches on A roads. It is fairly flat ride that weaves its way through quiet villages and down hedge lined country lanes.

You will pass through several villages that were mentioned in the Domesday Book. Some have change drastically like Buslingthorpe, whose medieval village is outlined by mounds in the ground. While in Buslingthorpe if you get the chance pay a visit to the small, but delightful church. In Welton you can see one of the favourite haunts of the Dambuster pilots, The Black Bull and next to it the fantastic Secret Garden Tearooms which has a warm welcome for cyclists.

Distance: 25.8 miles (41.5km)

Ascent: 528ft (16m) approx.

Grade: Moderate

Journey time @ 8mph: 3.5 hours approx.

Toilets: John Street, Market Rasen.

Step by step instructions
  1. Let's set off!
  2. 1

From the Market Place in Market Rasen turn left to head along the A631 through the centre of the town. At the traffic light on the crossroads turn right towards Linwood and Wragby.

  3. 2

Follow the road as it gently climbs out of Market Rasen and then undulates towards Linwood. Immediately you leave Linwood turn right at the signpost to Buslingthorpe and Faldingworth and follow the road for a mile (1.6km) until you reach a T-junction.

  4. 3

Turn left and follow the road for 1.7 miles (2.7km) until you get to a T-junction at the village of Lissington.

  5. 4

You don’t really visit Lissington but turn right to follow quiet country roads towards Wickenby. Stay on this road for nearly 5 miles (8km) passing through Wickenby, Snelland and Reasby. You will cross over the railway line between Lincoln and Grimsby twice, once at Snelland and again at Reasby.

  6. 5

When you arrive at Stainton by Langton take the first turning on the right signposted to Scothern, the next village you will pass through. There is a sharp pull as you go over the bridge across the railway line, but the reward is a nice swift descent on the other side.

  7. 6

Continue on this road climbing steadily for just short of a mile (1.5km). It’s not very steep just an incline up to the road junction to turn right to follow the road into Scothern.

  8. 7

At Scothern there is the first chance to find refreshment. In the centre of the village is the Bottle and Glass pub and a little further on is Scothern Garden Centre which has a café. Make sure you have a lock with you as bikes have to be left out of your sight.

  9. 8

The route continues out of Scothern and at the fork in the road turn left up Heath Road. This is a gentle incline for around 1.25 miles (2km) before a drop towards the A46.

  10. 9

WARNING: Care must be taken at the junction of the A46 and it is best to proceed using the cycle track. Cross the A46 and turn right. Cross Horncastle Lane and keep on the path and follow it left around the corner towards Welton. Take care when joining the road and traffic.

  11. 10

Follow this road for 1.25 miles (2km) into Welton, where you will find the Black Bull pub and the delightful Secret Garden Tearooms.

  12. 11

The road continues through Welton and at the roundabout take the first exit on the roundabout to Hackthorn. You won’t go as far as Hackthorn unless you do the extended ride, which is documented at the end of this route.

  13. 12

Follow the road until you just pass the entrance to the golf club and bear right down a quiet lane, which you stay on for 1.5 miles (2.4km) until you turn right to Cold Hanworth.

  14. 13

Ride through the small village of Cold Hanworth and when you arrive at Spridlington Road turn right towards Faldingworth. A steady climb of around 2 miles (3.2km) is ahead of you now until you meet the A46.

  15. 14

WARNING: Take care while riding through Faldingworth and turning off to Buslingthorpe at the far end of the village. The turning is on a bend so be sure that nothing is coming the other way before crossing. Follow this road for 2 miles (3.2km) to the junction.

  16. 15

Here you have a choice both require an initial left turn, but then you can take the first right and follow the route back to Linwood and Market Rasen on the route you came on, or you can continue straight on towards Middle Rasen.

  17. 16

If you decide to go to Middle Rasen you need to follow this road for just over 2.3 miles (3.7km) until you reach the A46 and turn right. Again, care needs to be taken while riding on the A46 as you will have to turn right into the filter lane to join the A631, which will take you back to the start.

  18. You made it! Well done.
