Bob’s treks and travels

Contrary to popular belief, not all of Lincolnshire is flat. It always baffles me when I speak to new people and discover that many have never visited the Lincolnshire Wolds and most believe the land to be flat and uninteresting. Well, Bob is here to set the record straight and tell you about all the beautiful sights and sounds of the Lincolnshire Wolds.

The Lincolnshire Wolds is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and showcases the best of rural English countryside that remains quintessentially English – rolling hills, gentle streams, beautiful woodland and gorgeous quaint villages can all be found in the Wolds. It is less well known than the Yorkshire Wolds, Cotswolds or the popular Peak District which means it offers untouched beauty and hidden gems just waiting to be discovered.

I am going to ease you in gently with a picturesque two-mile walk inspired by the great Alfred, Lord Tennyson. Tennyson was a famous British poet who was born in Lincolnshire and took inspiration for his early works from the stunning Lincolnshire landscape. This walk explores the diverse variety of landscapes the Wolds has to offer and passes through Somersby, which was Tennyson’s birthplace.

This route passes Somersby House, Tennyson’s home for the first 28 years of his life, and the 15^th-century church of St Margaret which has plenty of information about Alfred Tennyson inside. Expect to see an old dairy and quarry on this route, as well as a lovely babbling brook and Holywell Wood where the Tennyson children played.

In the words of Tennyson “I have a love for old Lincolnshire faces and things which will stick by me as long as I live.” And I couldn’t agree more!
